Wikipedia started off as a spinoff of Nupedia, an online media business called Bomis's non-cancelled effort to create a free encyclopedia. Jimmy Wales, the founder of Nupedia and cofounder of Bomis, and Larry Sanger, who Wales had hired for the project, talked about enhancing Nupedia with a more transparent, complimentary project in 2000.
